Holden's View on Religion

I found the comments Holden made on religion very interesting. He starts by saying how he has trouble praying sometimes. One very interesting Holden says is, "I like Jesus and all, but I don't care too much for most of the other stuff in the Bible." Before saying this, Holden stated that he is an atheist. It seems quite odd that he would not believe in God, but at the same time still be aware of the Bible and many parts of it. Holden speaks about how one boy he went to school with tells him that he cannot like Jesus if he doesn't like the Disciples. This actually makes a lot of sense if you view it on a larger scale. If one claims they like something, they should almost like the other parts of it. People don't just choose a religion and decide that they are going to accept little parts that they like. It almost seems to defeat the purpose of religion as a whole, because faith is all about accepting something without understanding it completely. Another interesting part of this segment is how he states that his parents are different religions. I would have thought that having parents of different faiths would simply make their children have even stronger faith because of the diversity. It is the exact opposite with Holden's family though. All of the children in the family are atheists. This may hint a lot to how Holden and his siblings were raised. His parents may have thought giving their children the ability to choose a religion was a good option, but they may have not given guidance to what to do. In the end the children ended up without direction or a motivation to find a faith that was right for them. Religion is a huge part of most people. With this in mind, it is easy to see that Holden doesn't really have a strong faith or even a drive to obtain acceptance into a religion.
